November 1st, Still No Rent

Well, chalk up one more month heading into rent free.  Will l make it through the whole month with out moving into some where?  It will be a wait and see.  I emptied the tanks yesterday for the last time this season (l can't wait until April when the dump stations open again, and they have only been closed a day!).

As l have mentioned in previous posts, l have been taking an investment course.  I hope to turn that into an income stream so l can leave the rat race and next time winter comes around to Toronto, l can be far south. 

What l have been tossing around in my mind is I may choose to rent an office so l can trade.  I find it a bit hard in my little van, l need a couple of monitors to pay attention to the charts, an Internet connection and electricity to run it all.  Before l become completely mobile with this venture, l would need solar power, extra battery bank and some way of mounting monitors in the van.

An office is a lot cheaper then an apartment in Toronto.  I have been looking at spending between $300 and $500 for the office, where as, apartments are in the $800 to $1200 range.  If l am extremely lucky, maybe l can find an office where on the really cold nights, l could sleep there.  It will depend on the set up.

I have read of another vandweller finding an office space where he did that.  And when l worked at the job where l travelled and sold advertising, one of the guys that worked in the office would sleep in the office overnight.  A bit strange since he would sleep under his desk, in a bull pen, and never shower or change clothes.

I would love a place where l could take the cats in with me.....

  1. I have a friend in Toledo that rents a small industrial warehouse space with a 14' door. He parks his van there all winter long and seals off the big door as he doesn't drive his beast in that weather. He has built a pop up/take down shower he hooks to the bathroom hot water and he has been living like that for close to 3 yrs. When you walk in it feels like a campsite with some fake grass rolled out, his electric grill, tables etc.

    Good luck! Instead of labour/cost intensive day trading you may want to look at the s&p 500...one monitor, play for 2hrs a day and leave it alone.

    1. TravellingMan....l have looked at that option too. Unfortunately Toronto is high rent in Commercial and Residential properties.

      S&P is on my list. :-)

  2. Maybe you might get some inspiration from this guy - he's living in a Toyota Class C in Alaska this winter. He went into a lot of detail about his set up, but I don't think the wood stove would work in a Class B without some major changes!

  3. Why not purchase a larger motor home, you will have room to live in, and have space for an office, and park it in a campground during winter...I bet the payments will be cheaper than the office rent. Good luck whatever you end up doing:o)

    1. Sondra, unfortunately Toronto doesn't have any year round campgrounds....too freakin cold! As for a bigger unit.....much hard to be stealth.

  4. Here there are small office spaces that can be had for as little as $200 a month and that include internet, utilities and use of common areas and equipment. There's in co-op buildings or whatever they call them and it's basically a small room. I've even known people to split the space, getting rent down even lower.

  5. Here in TX (DFW area anyway), if you get caught "residing" in commercial space, (I'm not sure of the legal definition or parameters) there are fines, and I even know of a few lawsuits. :(
